The Old South Region
Lower Mississippi River
(Example of Itinerary)
Many Dates to Choose From
Day 1: New Orleans
We leave Baltimore-Washington International and fly to New Orleans,
Louisiana, the land of Cajun cuisine and Dixieland jazz. We'll board the
grand American Queen where we will prepare for our steamboat experience up
the Mississippi River and Mark Twain's America. As we are transported back
to that Golden Age of history, we'll discover the many activities and hear
the sounds of "Dixie" aboard this floating palace. We are
immersed with southern hospitality as we depart at 7:00 PM.
Day 2: Oak Alley
Our first port of call is Vacherie located in the peaceful area of grand
Old South traditions and surrounded by historic plantations. Visit the Oak
Valley Plantation and sample the southern architecture where the 19th
century sugarplanters lived and worked or view the Laura Plantation, home
of Br'er Rabbit and one of the last remaining Creole plantations. So much
to see!
Day 3: St. Francisville
Today we dock in St. Francisville, an area famous for its magnificent
plantation homes. Enjoy the exquisite beauty and tranquillity of the Old
South here. Visit the Oakley Plantation, home of John James Audubon's
"Birds of America," or step back in time and experience the Old
South during a tour of the Greenwood Plantation.
Day 4: Natchez
Today our port of call is the historic town of Natchez, Mississippi. More
than 500 ante-bellum structures, including more than 200 homes, can be
seen here just as it was prior to the Civil War. Tour two or three
mansions or learn the history of processing cotton on your visit to
Frogmore Plantation and cotton gin near Vidalia.
Day 5: Vicksburg
Our next stop in Mississippi is Vicksburg, home of the Vicksburg National
Military Park, one of the best preserved Civil War battlefields in
America. We can take the Battlefield and Siege Tour and explore the
gunboat Cairo, which after 75 years on the bottom of the muddy
Mississippi, has been salvaged and reconstructed.
Days 6 and 7:
Steamboatin'
We spend these two days steaming up the Mississippi as we head toward our
final destination on "the greatest steamboat the world has ever
known." Relax on the Texas Deck--the Front Porch of America--enjoy
entertainment in the Grand Saloon, meet for a game of gin in the
Gentleman's Card Room or the Ladies Parlor. There is also a swimming pool,
movie theater, and shops, not to mention the numerous places to dine!
Day 8: Memphis
This morning, we arrive in Memphis, Tennessee, and we bid farewell to the
Old South. We transfer to the airport for our return flight home.
