Day 1: Depart USA
We depart on an overnight flight from Atlanta to Berlin.
Day 2: Berlin, Wittenberg
Upon arriving in Berlin we will explore the city by coach before heading to Wittenberg. Overnight in Wittenberg.
Day 3: Wittenberg
We begin the day learning about the Reformation and the life of Martin Luther. We will visit the Castle Church where Luther posted the 95 Theses in 1517. We will also visit the Town Church (St. Mary’s Church) where he preached. We end the day with a visit to Wittenberg University to view some of the books from Martin Luther’s personal library. Overnight for a second night in Wittenberg.
Day 4: Erfurt, Eisenach
We travel to Erfurt, where Luther attended the university. A highlight will be a visit to the Augustinian Monastery, where he spent his early years as a monk. We will then travel to Eisenach to enjoy an afternoon tour of the Bach House that is dedicated to the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach. Overnight in Eisenach.
Day 5: Eisenach, Worms, Strasbourg
We begin the day with a tour of the formidable Wartburg Castle where Luther, under “house arrest”, translated the New Testament into the German language in 1523. We then travel to Worms to visit the site of the Imperial Diet in 1521 where Martin Luther challenged the entire Roman Catholic establishment by his refusal to recant the great doctrines of Protestantism. After seeing St. Peter's Church and the symbolic Luther Memorial near the town square, we travel to Strasbourg. Overnight in Strasbourg.
Day 6: Strasbourg, Constance
We begin the day with a visit to the magnificent Strasbourg Cathedral, the world’s tallest building from 1647 to 1874. We will then visit St. Thomas’ Church where Martin Bucer was pastor, along with other Reformation sites, before traveling to the border town of Constance. Overnight in Constance.
Day 7: Constance, Zurich
We begin our day in Constance. It was here on July 6, 1415 that Jan Hus, a forerunner of the Reformation, was burned at the stake after he was tried and convicted as a heretic by the Roman Catholic Church. We will visit the Memorial to Jan Hus and take a tour of the Hus Museum. We will then cross into Switzerland and travel to Zurich which was the home of Ulrich Zwingli, one of the most important Swiss Reformers. We’ll visit the Grossmunster Church and its statue of Zwingli, as well as Zwingli’s office in Helferei Zurich. Overnight in Zurich.
Day 8: Zurich, Grindelwald
We begin the day with a tour of some additional Reformation sites in Zurich before heading to the Swiss Alps, specifically the Lauterbrunnen Valley, the inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth. Upon arriving in Grindelwald, we will have the afternoon and evening free to explore this beautiful region of the world and to enjoy the local attractions. Overnight in Grindelwald.
Day 9: Grindelwald, Geneva
We will being the day by touring the Lauterbrunnen Valley by coach before continuing our journey to Geneva. Upon arriving in Geneva, we will visit the Reformation Wall, the 100-year old tribute to the Protestant Reformation and its impact on the world. Overnight in Geneva.
Day 10: Geneva
We spend the day touring Geneva where we will visit John Calvin’s church, St. Pierre’s, and the Calvin Auditorium where the Scottish reformer, John Knox, led an English-speaking congregation before returning to Scotland. We will tour the Reformation Museum and the Maison Tavel (the museum of Geneva) along with other Reformation sites. Overnight in Geneva for a second night.
Day 11: Home
Early this morning we transfer to the Geneva airport for our flight back to Atlanta.
