Our first stop today is at the Stav Kirke, an exact replica of the famous 800-year-old Borglund Stavekirke in Norway. Afterwards we travel with our guide along the scenic byways of the Black Hills National Forest, viewing mountains, lakes, canyons, and famous monuments. Perhaps the most famous is Mount Rushmore, one of the world's largest monuments. Also visit Crazy Horse Monument which recently dedicated the completion of the face of Crazy Horse. When totally completed, this monument will be the largest in the world. Our guide describes the rich history of gold mining and the "Old West" stories as we travel to the town of Deadwood, where its most notable residents have their final resting place at "Boot Hill Cemetery." There's free time for shopping, visiting an old saloon, or just enjoying the flavor of an Old West Town before dinner at the Gold Dust Restaurant.

Day 4: Devil's Tower

This morning after breakfast, we travel with our guide westward into Wyoming, over the Bighorn Mountains and through Shell Canyon enroute to Sheridan, Wyoming. Along the way we make a stop at Devil's Tower. This stump-shaped tower of rock, at 1,280 feet, is the tallest such formation in the United States. This evening we have dinner and the evening on our own to explore the Wyoming town of Sheridan.

Today we travel to Cody, Wyoming. This town is named after its founder, Col. William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Visit a complex of museums dedicated to the artifacts, cultures, and traditions of the American West. There are also personal items of Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley in the museum, plus Indian art and ceremonial items. Tonight we have dinner at the Historic Irma Hotel, built by Buffalo Bill and named for his daughter. After dinner we head out for an exciting time at the Cody Night Rodeo.

This national treasure of more than 2.2 million acres has a central portion of broad, volcanic plateau with an altitude between 7,000 and 8,500 feet. Mountain ranges on almost every side rise 2,000 to 4,000 feet. After checking into our hotel, we enjoy dinner in Yellowstone with time afterwards for a relaxing stroll.

Wildlife abounds in Yellowstone, and we are treated to sights of American bison, elk, mule deer, and if we are lucky, moose and even grizzly! After lunch at Old Faithful, we travel south alongside the Grand Tetons to our lodging for the next two nights in Jackson, Wyoming. Dinner this evening will be an exciting adventure into the mountains on a genuine Chuckwagon, complete with singing cowboys.
