Day 1: Arrival
Welcome to the Old West! Passengers will be met by your motorcoach and professional tour director at Denver International Airport and transported to our nearby hotel. We'll enjoy a festive welcome reception this evening and get acquainted before embarking on our exciting Old West Trail adventure.
Day 2: Buffalo Bill Memorial / Fort Caspar
We'll start our Old West adventure with a visit to the final resting place of the man who probably best personifies the spirit of the West, Buffalo Bill Cody. Pony Express rider, buffalo hunter, army scout, and finally Wild West Showman, Buffalo Bill did more to promote and perpetuate the frontier than any other American at the turn of the century. We'll take in the breathtaking views high atop Lookout Mountain and tour the museum housing a lifetime of mementos from an extraordinary life before heading north to Wyoming. Overnight in Casper.
Day 3: Little Big Horn Battlefield
Today's trail leads to the Little Big Horn National Historic Battlefield, site of the famous confrontation between Crazy Horse and the egotistical Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer. We'll also pay a visit to the Bradford-Brinton Memorial Ranch for some insight into 19th century ranch life before checking in to our hotel in the old cowboy town of Sheridan.
Day 4: Historic Deadwood
Legalized gambling has returned to the storied gulch where the likes of Wild Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane and Poker Alice once walked. We'll have time to try our own luck at the tables as well as tour historic Boot Hill where the legends now rest. Overnight in Rapid City, the gate city to the Hills.
Day 5: The Black Hills
Today we'll visit the Stav Kirke, an exact replica of an 800-year-old church in Borgund, Norway, before entering the Black Hills National Forest (which encompasses over 1.2 million acres of western South Dakota). There we'll view Mount Rushmore, the Shrine of Democracy, and "dine with the Presidents". Our afternoon drive will bring us to Crazy Horse Monument, the still-unfinished mountain carving dedicated to Native Americans, and Custer State Park, one of the largest state parks in the country. We'll get a close-up view of America's largest publicly-owned buffalo herd on an exciting jeep ride over the park's wildlife loop. Dinner tonight is at the State Game Lodge, summer White House to two US Presidents.
Day 6: Cheyenne Frontier Days
We leave the sacred Paha Sapa of the Sioux today as we head for the premiere celebration of the West, and the "Grandaddy of 'em all", Cheyenne Frontier Days. We'll take in the evening Grand Stand Show upon our arrival, and overnight in nearby Laramie.
Day 7: Cheyenne Frontier Days
A full day of Frontier Days festivities are ahead, beginning with an old west parade. We'll also visit the Frontier Days Museum and special western art show before the afternoon rodeo. Overnight again in Laramie.
Day 8: Rocky Mountain National Park
Today's agenda includes a scenic drive through Big Thompson Canyon and over famous Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. We'll stop in Estes Park to explore its unique offerings and shopping opportunities, and enjoy lunch at the historic Stanley Hotel. We'll make numerous photography stops along the way so be sure to bring plenty of film. Overnight in Boulder.
Day 9: Departures
What better way to bid farewell to our very special Old West Trail than with a festive champagne breakfast served high atop Flagstaff Mountain. Here amid the panoramic views of the Rockies to the west and the plains to the east, our journey draws to a fitting close. Airport transfers will be provided as need to Denver International Airport.
