Day 1: Toy & Train Museum
We travel across the Pennsylvania countryside into Wheeling, West Virginia where we step back into our childhood of dolls, toys, and trains at the Kruger Street Toy and Train Museum. Room after room is filled with over a century of childhood dreams. Their model train layout covers 400-square-feet. After a time to refresh in our hotel in Wheeling, depart for The Point Overlook for a panoramic view of the Ohio River Valley with a delicious dinner at The Omni Restaurant.
Day 2: Warther Carvings
Following our full breakfast at the hotel, we travel to Dennison, Ohio to visit the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum. In 1942 it was known as the "Servicemen's Canteen" because over 1.5 million transient soldiers received free food as they traveled the railroads to their duty stations. The museum contains uniforms, photographs, and other World War II memorabilia. A box lunch similar to those given to soldiers will be our lunch today. Our next stop is in Dover, Ohio where we explore the wonders of Warther Carvings. World master carver Ernest "Mooney" Warther, using only a knife, filed and ingeniously carved remarkable replicas of steam locomotives in ivory, ebony, and walnut, and trimmed in pearl. Other carvings are on display along with Mrs. Warther's button house with her collection of more than 73,000 buttons. We then check into our lodging for the next two nights in Strasburg, Ohio. Dinner tonight is served in the Historic Zoar Tavern.
Day 3: Sugarcreek
Following a continental breakfast at the hotel, visit the workshop of the grandson of "Mooney" Warther, David Warther. He has devoted his life to carving model ships from solid ivory which are accurate in every detail. Next we arrive in Sugarcreek, the "Little Switzerland of Ohio." After lunch at the Swiss Hat Restaurant, there's free time to browse the unique shops in town. This afternoon a local guide joins us for a tour of the town and surrounding area. Dinner tonight is at Atwood Lodge overlooking the lake and beautiful countryside.
Day 4: DeBence Antique Music World
Begin the day by traveling east to the town of Franklin, Pennsylvania. This afternoon we visit DeBence Antique Music World with their collection of over 100 automated music machines, from simple music boxes to nickelodeons and orchestrions. Next we tour St. John's Episcopal Church with its magnificent Tiffany windows. Our lodging and dinner this evening are at the lovely Inn at Franklin.
Day 5: Story & Clark Piano Factory
After our continental breakfast at the hotel, we visit the Story & Clark Piano Factory to see the interesting process of assembling pianos. Then begin our journey home with arrival by early evening.
