The Missouri River Fur Trade was instrumental in opening the West for the settlers to follow. Spurred by a fickle European fashion trend (the beaver top hat) French, British and eventually American entrepreneurs pushed upstream, established trading relationships with the Natives and unwittingly gave birth to an entirely new American character: the Mountain Man. Beginning on the banks of the Missouri River I Bismarck, ND, this nine day tour includes visits to beautifully restored trading posts follows the military trails of Custer and Sheridan revisits the last great gold rush in America, traces a portion of the Oregon Trail, and explores the ranch life of the West's most vigorous advocate, Teddy Roosevelt.
