UW Whitewater Alumni Association Invites you to:
Highlights of Florence and Venice

March 1-8, 2010

Day 1, March 1- Depart USA for Florence, Italy
We depart from Chicago this afternoon and fly overnight to Florence, Italy. Sit back and enjoy the service while in flight.

Day 2, March 2- Arrive in Florence, Italy
Upon arrival in Florence we will meet our Italian assistant who will welcome us to Italy and assist as we board our motor coach and transfer to our Florence hotel.  The rest of the day is free to explore on your own or rest after the flight. Tonight there will be a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 3, March 3- Florence City Tour
Today’s included tour will be the highlights of Florence.  This morning enjoy a visit to the Cathedral, Giotto’s Bell Tower, Baptistry and Signoria Square.  This afternoon we take part in a guided tour of the Academy Museum where the famous statue of David by Michelangelo is kept. The statue of David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture sculpted from 1501-1504.  We enjoy our evening at leisure in Florence.

Day 4, March 4- Free day or Optional Tour to Pisa
You may take a free day in Florence or choose to take the optional tour to Pisa.  Pisa is a treasure chest full of surprises from the bright Lungarni quays walled by noble buildings, to the web of narrow, medieval alleys leading to the famous Piazza dei Miracoli. Home of Galileo Galilei, the Leaning Tower, Bell Tower of the
Cathedral and more than 20 historic churches, Pisa is a city you won’t want to miss.  We return to Florence for our evening at leisure.
Full day Pisa: $95*

Day 5, March 5- Free day or Optional Siena & Assisi Tour
There is a mysterious side of Siena that most visitors miss. The plague wiped out two-thirds of this city's population, and there is a skeleton of a cathedral as a monument to that catastrophe. The tower in the central square affords a spectacular view of the city and "Campo" (square). We will visit the adjoining Palazzo Pubblico, full of art treasures and artifacts of Medieval times, and then go on to the grand Cathedral.  This afternoon we travel through scenic Umbria to the ancient walled hillside village of Assisi. Here you will enjoy a guided tour of this beautiful, medieval town, which will include the Basilica San Francesco, decorated with some of the most renowned frescoes in the world.
Full day Siena & Assisi: $120*

Day 6, March 6- Venice City Tour
We depart Florence this morning and travel to the romantic city of Venice.  Upon our arrival in Venice we will enjoy an afternoon tour to include St. Mark’s Square, Byzantine Basilica, Doges Palace and the Bridge of Sighs.  This afternoon we transfer to our hotel for the remainder of the evening free for our leisure.

Day 7, March 7- Free day in Venice or Optional Murano & Burano Tour
Enjoy a free day in Venice to explore on your own or take part in an optional tour to Murano and Burano Islands.  In English-speaking countries, glass artisans are often performer-pitchmen at craft shows and festivals where they blow glass baubles for a few dollars or pounds each. But there was a time when the trade of glassblowing--indeed, glassmaking in general--was an elite pursuit dominated by craftsmen in the Venetian Republic, most notably on the island of Murano in the Venetian Lagoon.  Today we will visit the isle of Murano and enjoy a guided tour of the Glass Museum.  We will also visit Burano Island, famous for its colorful pastel buildings and lace-making abilities.  We return to our hotel and enjoy a farewell dinner with time to share the highlights of our time in Florence and Venice.
Half day Murano and Burano Isle tour: $65*

 Day 8, March 8- Flight
We transfer to the Venice airport for a flight home arriving back in the US today.
